What Is Neuropsychology?
About
Clinical Neuropsychology is a specialised branch of psychology which incorporates knowledge from the fields of neuroanatomy, diagnostic assessment, and counselling. Neuropsychologists are focused on the structure and function of the brain and are experts in understanding the brain’s impact on cognition, emotions, behaviour, and day-to-day functioning. Neuropsychologists can provide one-off assessments or ongoing intervention for children, adolescents, adults and older adults.

Assessments & Reports
Neuropsychology assessments involve comprehensive analysis of cognition or ‘thinking skills’ (attention, learning, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, intellectual ability etc.). Individuals will engage in standardised tasks involving words, numbers, stories, drawings and other activities. Neuropsychology assessments are often sought for the following reasons:
- To better understand cognitive strengths and weaknesses
- Diagnosis of cognitive conditions (intellectual disability, learning or developmental disorders, acquired brain injury, dementia, etc.)
- To guide clinicians on how best to provide education and intervention to their clients
- Providing evidence of cognitive disability to assist applications for funding and support (e.g., for the NDIS or DSP)
- Recommendations for specific funding and supports (e.g., NDIS funded supports or as part of an SDA Eligibility Assessment)
- As evidence within legal or court-related proceedings (i.e., medico-legal assessments regarding criminal or civil matters)
- Decision-making capacity assessments, particularly where the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) may be involved
Neuropsychology assessment services typically involve 2-3 hours of assessment with the individual, followed by several hours formulating the results of the assessment and creating a comprehensive report.
Neuropsychology Intervention Programmes
Neuropsychological intervention programmes are bespoke treatment programmes designed to support how a person thinks, feels, and functions in daily life. Our neuropsychologists may work on areas like memory, attention, problem-solving, mood, or fatigue. Programmes can focus on strengthening skills, rebuilding abilities after illness or injury, or finding practical strategies to work around challenges. Goals vary from person to person, but often aim to increase independence, confidence, and quality of life—at home, at school, at work, and in the community.
