Neuropsychology Assessment

About

Neuropsychology is a specialised area of psychology that focuses on how the brain works and how it affects your thinking, behaviour, and daily life. Neuropsychologists are experts in understanding the relationship between brain function and your cognitive skills, emotions, and everyday functioning.

A neuropsychology assessment with CapacityPlus will explore how your brain functions and identify your cognitive strengths and challenges. We assess your thinking skills—such as attention, memory, learning, reasoning, and decision-making—to provide you with a clear understanding of your abilities and the areas where you may need support.

Our assessments are appropriate for individuals of all ages and abilities, including children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

Why Choose a Neuropsychology Assessment

A neuropsychology assessment can help you:

  • Understand your cognitive strengths and challenges — discover what your brain does well and where you may find learning or thinking tasks difficult
  • Understand changes in your thinking skills — following an event such as a stroke, head injury (including motor vehicle accidents or falls), or other brain-related changes
  • Get a diagnosis — if you have concerns about a cognitive or neurological condition, such as intellectual disability, ADHD, foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, acquired brain injury, or dementia
  • Understand how your medical or psychiatric conditions affect your thinking — explore how conditions like depression, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease impact your cognitive skills
  • Improve your skills and daily functioning — receive evidence-based recommendations to improve your cognitive abilities, behaviour, mood, and everyday life
  • Access disability support funding — obtain the assessments and documentation needed to apply for support through the NDIS, Disability Support Pension (DSP), carer’s allowance, or school-related services

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a neuropsychology assessment?

Assessments typically take 2–4 hours and involve discussion and standardised activities designed to assess your thinking skills. You’ll work through paper and pen tasks, numbers, words, stories, and drawings. We will guide you throughout the process, and you’ll have breaks as needed.

What's included in my report and feedback?

After your assessment, we provide a report that explains your results. Your report includes what the results mean, your diagnosis or outcome (if applicable), how this impacts your daily functioning, and evidence-based recommendations to help you move forward. You’ll receive either a written report or participate in a feedback session to discuss your results.

How should I prepare for my assessment?

On the day of your assessment, take any medications as usual and wear your regular glasses or hearing aids if needed. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early and getting a good night’s sleep beforehand. You’re welcome to bring a support person—a family member, carer, or friend—if you’d like.

Where are assessments held?

We offer face-to-face assessments at our offices in Melbourne and Warrnambool, with outreach services available in Geelong and regional Victoria. We also offer video telehealth appointments when appropriate if you prefer to attend online. Our team can discuss the best option for your situation.

What if I'm concerned about engaging in an assessment?

Our neuropsychologists are experts in supporting people of all ages and abilities through the assessment process. If you have concerns, we can support you by splitting your assessment over multiple days or weeks, providing additional breaks, or adapting tasks to suit your needs.

How long does it take to get my results?

It typically takes 4–6 weeks from your assessment to receive your written report. This allows us to review all available information carefully and develop recommendations tailored to your unique situation. If you need your report sooner, let us know as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to accommodate an urgent timeline.

What are the costs and funding options?

We offer private payment options and accept funding through the NDIS, TAC (Transport Accident Commission), DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs), and WorkSafe, along with funding from many not-for-profit, community, and government organisations. Medicare rebates are not typically available for neuropsychology assessments, and most private health funds don’t cover these services—though you’re welcome to check with your fund directly. Please discuss your funding options with your case manager or insurance provider.

Can I access a neuropsychology assessment with NDIS funding?

Yes. CapacityPlus offers specially tailored neuropsychology assessments for NDIS participants. Our assessments are designed to support your NDIS goals and planning, and our team can liaise directly with your NDIS planner or coordinator. Contact our team or visit our NDIS page for more information.
