Neuropsychology Therapy
About
Neuropsychologists are experts in understanding the relationship between brain health and your cognitive skills, emotions, and everyday functioning. If your thinking skills have been affected— by injury, illness, or other changes to your brain—a neuropsychologist can help you understand why and provide targeted support.
CapacityPlus neuropsychologists work with clients experiencing a range of challenges related to brain function, including difficulties with attention, learning, memory, planning, and decision-making. Our most common presentations include concussion and brain injury, stroke, ADHD, mild cognitive impairment and early neurodegenerative conditions, high fatigue, low mood, and anxiety. We support you to improve your skills, build your confidence, feel better, and get back to doing the activities you love.
We provide therapy in-person or online for individuals aged 16 years and older.
Why Choose a Neuropsychologist for Your Therapy Needs
Therapy with a neuropsychologist can help you:
- Understand how your brain changes affect your daily life — receive education to understand why your thinking, mood, or behaviour has changed and how these changes impact your everyday activities
- Improve your skills and daily functioning — receive targeted support to implement evidence-based recommendations designed to improve your cognitive abilities, behaviour, mental health, and independence
- Recover from brain injury — learn new skills, improve areas of difficulty, and implement cognitive strategies to recover and return to work, study, or activities you value (for example, after a concussion, brain injury, or stroke)
- Manage fatigue, stress, low mood, anxiety, and loss of confidence — develop practical strategies to address these challenges in the context of your cognitive changes
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a neuropsychologist differ from other therapists?
A neuropsychologist is the best choice if your main concern is how changes to your thinking skills are affecting your daily life. Neuropsychologists are uniquely trained to understand how brain injury or neurological conditions affect your memory, attention, processing speed, planning, and other cognitive abilities—and importantly, how these changes can lead to emotional difficulties, anxiety, and challenges with daily activities.
While occupational therapists (OTs) excel at helping you adapt daily activities and build practical strategies, neuropsychologists have the specialist training in brain function and cognitive rehabilitation. A neuropsychologist provides the deeper understanding of why cognitive changes are happening, assists with widespread mood-related impacts, and teaches you targeted strategies to work around or support these abilities.
Psychologists are excellent for treating primary mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or trauma. However, if your cognitive difficulties are secondary to brain changes (for example, memory problems after a stroke, or attention difficulties with ADHD), a neuropsychologist is better equipped manage the combination of difficulties, which often improves your mood and confidence as a result.
Can I see a neuropsychologist for support with my mental health?
Yes, if your mental health challenges are connected to changes in your thinking skills. For example, if you’re experiencing anxiety or low mood that developed after a brain injury, concussion, or stroke, a neuropsychologist can address both the cognitive changes and the emotional impact.
However, if your main issue is a primary mental health condition (such as severe anxiety, depression, or trauma), you should consider seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist instead. If you’re unsure whether your situation is appropriate for neuropsychology therapy, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your specific circumstance.
What can I expect from therapy?
Our neuropsychologists will develop a therapy program tailored uniquely to you, based on your cognitive profile, your challenges, and your goals. Sessions are practical and focused, working on real-life situations that matter to you. Some things we work on include setting meaningful goals, managing fatigue and attention difficulties, implementing cognitive strategies in everyday life, building emotional regulation, and encouraging mindfulness. We can also provide training and guidance to family members, teachers, or care team members to ensure everyone is supporting you in the most effective way.
Where will my therapy appointments take place?
We offer face-to-face appointments at our offices in Melbourne and Warrnambool. We also offer video telehealth appointments so you can attend from the comfort of your home or if you prefer to participate online.
Do you use AI support for therapy appointments?
With your permission, we use Heidi Health to assist with clinical notes and record keeping. This means our neuropsychologists can spend more time talking to and supporting you, and less time on administrative tasks. Your neuropsychologist will discuss this option with you and ensure you are comfortable. If you prefer not to use this tool, you can still participate in therapy without it.
What are the costs and funding options?
We accept funding through the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), TAC (Transport Accident Commission), DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs), and WorkSafe. If you are paying privately, Medicare rebates may be available (we recommend checking your eligibility with Medicare or your GP). Please discuss your funding options with your case manager, insurance provider, or our team when arranging your appointment.
